What are Plant Breeder’s Rights?Plant Breeder’s Rights are similar to copyright law for intellectual property only they protect and promote plant and turf innovation. The Act recognises that plant breeder’s make significant intellectual and financial investment in developing new species and aims to support and protect this type of innovation. What is the purpose of the Plant Breeder’s Rights Act?The purpose of the Act is to encourage Australian plant and turf breeders to develop new plant varieties adapted for Australian growing conditions, which can be significantly different to conditions overseas. Under the Plant Breeder’s Rights Act 1994, breeders of unique plants and turf varieties are issued with a Breeder’s License.
