Laying your new turf

Laying turf can be done almost all year round in Australia, other than in very cold areas.

Prior to laying, keep turf moist and in the shade where possible. The area where turf is to be laid should also be kept moist, ensuring the turf is not damaged when being laid on hot summer’s days.

Turf is a living product and should be laid as soon as possible. Even in ideal conditions, turf needs to be laid within 24 hrs of being cut to ensure its health and vigour.

Before laying the turf, ensure that the finished soil level is 2 - 4cm below any mowing strips. For further detail on site preparation, click here

Roll out the turf starting along the longest straight edge, laying one strip around the perimeter first, then have your runs lay across any slope to avoid erosion, and stagger your joints.

Lay turf in a brickwork pattern and make sure that each turf roll makes good contact with the soil. Cut away any excess turf using a spade.

Once the turf is laid, roll with a lawn roller to ensure roots are in contact with the soil. Fertilise the lawn with a starter fertiliser and water immediately as per the instructions listed in Establishing your Turf.
