You are here: Home » Turf Care » Establishing New Turf Establishing new turfApply "starter fertiliser" that is high in phosphateOnce your turf is laid, Oz Tuff Turf recommends the use of an 18.10.9 Starter Fertiliser which is a Controlled Release Nitrogen (CRN) Fertiliser that will ensure your turf has the nutrients it requires during establishment. Oz Tuff Turf also offers an 18.10.9 Starter fertiliser that is coated with a pre-emergent herbicide called Ronstar + Starter 18.10.9. This product will safely control grass weeds from emerging whilst your turf gets established as well as giving your turf the vital nutrients needed during establishment. Both products will feed your lawn for up to ten weeks and Oz Tuff Turf can supply these products when you turf is delivered. Initial wateringOnce your turf is laid it must be watered immediately and kept moist until the roots take hold. Once your turf has taken root, you can decrease the level of watering to suit your climate. As a general guide, it is recommended that you deeply water your newly established turf three times per week during the summer months, and once a twice week in winter. If your soil preparation has been appropriate, the turf once established, will only need one deep watering per week. Please check with your local water authority on water restrictions and possible exemptions for the establishment of your new lawn. Initial mowing requirements during establishmentNew lawns should be mowed as soon as the turf has rooted in properly. This time frame will vary according to the variety and also the time of year. As a general rule of thumb - between the second and third week after installation. The first mow should be done on a high setting so as to just "tidy" the lawn. Mow at first on a high setting, and then gradually lower your mower setting. Be very gentle with your new lawn - you may also have to restrict foot traffic on the lawn until it is established. For couchgrass, 18-25mm is a good height. Lift the mower slightly for winter mowing height. For Sir Walter cut at 20-40mm during the growing season, and 30-60mm in the cooler months. Oz Tuff does offer a number of grasses that require less mowing. Click here to compare turf varieties on offer from Oz Tuff Turf.
